Own Our Make

As part of my archaeological cataloguing project I’ve been attempting to find the origin of a particular button. It’s brass and has an inscription which reads, “Our Own Make”. I’ve been pummelling through articles, books, and the Interwebz in order to find clues without a whole lotta luck.

Until last week when I read some very similar buttons were discovered at a site in Australia. Yesterday I found a collection with some of these buttons. Interestingly enough these buttons were still attached to clothing. Australian military uniforms dating between 1880-1910 to be precise. One of these buttons has also been found upon a German military outfit from the same time period.

Yet after talking with the Senior Curator at the Military Heraldry & Technology Section of the Australian War Memorial, I was informed these are probably replacement buttons. But he also speculated in case of the German uniform, the button may have been replaced by a pre-existing stock of British made buttons that was in Germany prior to World War One.

Now I have a probable country of origin, but I'm still looking for the manufacturer of this button. The search continues...
